Gruffy Field, Charterhouse-on-Mendip

The highlight of a visit to G.B. Cave is the large stream passage known as the Gorge, which forms an enormous continuous void with the very impressive Main Chamber.

From the entrance, the Gorge can be reached by a choice of two routes, one relatively easy and the other more complicated. A third route, the Ooze, was (mercifully) blocked as a result of the floods of July 1968 and access to a wet and miserable stretch of passage is now no longer possible. Off the Gorge and Main Chamber are some very interesting inlet passages (mainly dry) and a finely decorated extension beyond Ladder Dig, which lies directly above the choked end of the stream passage beyond the Main Chamber. The stream re-emerges in Charterhouse Cave at the Confluence and follows a route through that cave to Cheddar Risings, 2.5km to the south.

WARNING: High levels of CO2 have been recorded in this cave.
